HONG KONG - A star-studded propaganda epic that marks the 90th anniversary of the Chinese Communist Party is facing claims that its box office numbers are being inflated by movie theaters.
Reports have surfaced of a multiplex chain printing tickets for "Beginning of the Great Revival," and then crossing out the title and writing in the names of other movies. Hong Kong's Apple Daily newspaper on Wednesday published photos of three such tickets.
Chinese box office numbers are based on computer-printed tickets, and such a practice would inflate numbers for "Beginning of the Great Revival" while lowering the results of other movies.
Calls to the spokesman for the movie weren't answered. A woman who answered the phone at the multiplex chain asked a reporter to call back.
