Captain Jack Sparrow remains the biggest pirate of all.
On Sunday, Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides hit the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office to secure its place in movie history.
Only seven films have crossed the $1 billion milestone; On Stranger Tides becomes No. 8.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest also is a member of the billion-dollar club, having earned $1.1 billion worldwide. On Stranger Tides is certain to pass up Dead Man’s Chest.
On Stranger Tides has done massive business at the international box office, where it’s grossed $774 million through Sunday. Domestically, it’s earned $233.7 million for a worldwide total of $1.007 billion.
The movie is Disney’s biggest international release ever and the third biggest of all time. It’s also Disney’s highest-grossing film in China and Russia.
The success of the fourth Pirates is a big victory for Disney CEO Rich Ross, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Rob Marshall.
“This is such a beloved franchise, and Johnny Depp is such a huge worldwide star,” Bruckheimer told THR.
Bruckheimer also credited Pirates writers Ted Elliot and Terry Rossio, as well as Marshall and previous Pirates director Gore Verbinski, who set the template for the franchise.
“The combination of all these talents was really something,” he said.
